Dear Sean,
Thank you for your letters on this blog, and for the Observer interview, which will surely go a long way to separating you (as TLS shamefully confessed to being too ignorant or too lazy to do) from the joke candidates. It also underlined for me why, old times' sake apart, I was delighted to have the opportunity to nominate you, and very much hope that you will be elected. It is thoroughly undesirable that the Professorship of Poetry should be regarded as the preserve of professional critics, or even professional poets. Hardly original, but particularly topical because it relates directly to the "Crisis in the Humanities" that we are all agonising over - not just a crisis of funding, or even of political or social indifference or hostility to the humanities, but of the failure of most of us who practice in them to speak to anyone but each other. It is more than time for us to learn how, and you are remarkably well equipped to teach us, as your manifesto proclaims, to be serious without being inaccessible - or interesting without being trivial. One reason, incidentally, why even if you weren't in the field I wouldn't be voting for your weightiest opponent.
